Askja Caldera
The unique wonder of Askja is one that should not be left unseen. It is one of Iceland’s largest caldera, with crater-like hills surrounding the beautiful lake, formed by an enormous eruption in 1875. It is now Iceland’s second deepest lake at 220 m. Close to Lake Askja, lies the crater lake Víti, in which adventurous people often go for a swim, as the temperature ranges from 20 – 40 degrees C. On our Askja flight route we will fly around Herðubreið – often called the Queen of Icelandic Mountains, because of her beautiful form.
